The school was founded by Frank Marchbank in 1935 at Mowden Hall in Darlington, County Durham as a traditional boys-only boarding preparatory school. During World War II, in 1940, it evacuated to Windermere, Cumbria due to Darlington's status as an industrial centre which would have made it a likely target for the ''Luftwaffe''. It moved to its current location after the war ended. In 1982 it became fully coeducational with the admission of girls.〔(History of Mowden )〕
